How to Store Green Onions

This guide explains three different ways to store green onions to maintain their freshness and extend shelf life: wrapping in damp paper towels inside a bag in the fridge, storing root ends in a water-filled jar covered loosely in the fridge, or keeping them in water on a windowsill. Each method aims to keep the green onions hydrated and crisp for several days.

Description

Green onions can be preserved by loosely wrapping them in a damp paper towel and placing them inside a zip-top bag in the refrigerator, either sealed completely or partially open. The paper towel's moisture keeps the onions hydrated, and adding water when the towel dries helps prolong freshness.

Alternatively, placing the root end of green onions in a jar with at least half a cup of water and covering the top loosely with a plastic bag or rubber band traps moisture around the stalks and slows wilting. This container should be refrigerated with water refreshed every few days.

For growing or keeping onions fresh without refrigeration, the root end can be placed in a water-filled jar set on a windowsill, changing the water every few days. This method benefits from natural light and regular water replacement to keep the onions crisp.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1-3 green onions bunches

Instructions

  1. Paper Towel Method: Loosely wrap the green onions in a damp paper towel and then palace in a zip-top bag. Either seal the bag partially or leave it open. Write the date on the outside of the bag and store in the refrigerator. Add additional water to the paper towel as it dries out.
  2. Jar Method: Place the root end of the green onions in a jar that has been filled with at least ½ cup of water. Place a plastic zip-top bag or the grocery bag they came in on top of it. Seal most of the base by zipping up the zip-top bag or placing a rubber band around the base so moisture is trapped inside. Store the green onions in the refrigerator and be sure to replace the water every few days.
  3. Window Method: Place the root end of the green onions in a jar that has been filled with at least ½ cup of water. Keep the jar of onions in a windowsill, replacing the water every few days to keep it fresh.
