Hush Puppies

Hush puppies are small, deep-fried balls made from a cornmeal batter enriched with flour, sugar, and buttermilk, and flavored with green onions. Fried until golden and crisp on the outside with a tender, moist interior, these savory bites come with a spicy honey drizzle that offers a sweet and mildly spicy contrast.

Description

This Hush Puppies recipe mixes cornmeal, all-purpose flour, sugar, salt, baking powder, black pepper, egg, buttermilk, and thinly sliced green onions into a thick batter. The batter is spooned into hot oil and fried at 350°F, turning occasionally to achieve even golden brown crusts. The result is crisp on the outside yet moist and fluffy inside. The accompanying drizzle made from honey and chili sauce adds a spicy-sweet note that complements the savory hush puppies. These are best served warm and make a flavorful side or appetizer.

The recipe yields about 16 hush puppies, serving two per person. Frying them in batches ensures even cooking and optimal texture. Season with salt immediately after frying to enhance flavor. The spicy honey drizzle can be adjusted to taste for heat intensity.
