Instant Pot Air Fryer French Fries

Instant Pot Air Fryer French Fries use medium to large Russet potatoes sliced into strips, soaked briefly in water, then seasoned with olive oil, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. They can be cooked either in an air fryer or using an Instant Pot with a pressure cooker crisplid, producing fries that can be crisp on the outside yet tender inside. The recipe allows for seasoning variations to customize the flavor while offering a straightforward method to enjoy homemade fries.

Description

The Instant Pot Air Fryer French Fries recipe starts with slicing and soaking Russet potatoes, which helps remove excess starch for better crispiness. After drying, the potato strips are tossed with olive oil, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder, ensuring an evenly seasoned coat. Two cooking methods are provided: air frying at 375ºF for around 10-15 minutes with a toss halfway through to promote even cooking and crispness, or using the pressure cooker crisplid with a trivet and basket setup to cook the fries in a single layer. This approach targets a balance of a crisp exterior with a tender interior characteristic of good fries.

The seasoning combination offers a mild savory profile with garlic undertones, while the method allows flexibility in quantity and separation of fries to influence texture. This makes it suitable for cooks who want crisp fries without deep frying and prefer controlling seasoning. Adjusting seasonings such as paprika or chili lime after cooking is also an option, adding variety for different tastes. The recipe's flexibility in both cooking apparatus and seasoning makes it adaptable to kitchen tools and flavor preferences.

The recipe is practical for serving as a side dish or snack, complementing various main courses. Cooking in batches based on fry thickness and air fryer/pot size is advised to maintain crispness. Soaking and patting dry is key to achieving the desired texture.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 2 potato Russett, medium or large in size
  • 3/4 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

Instructions

  1. Scrub potatoes and then slice into strips. You can peel the potatoes if you like.
  2. Soak potatoes in fresh water for 15 minutes. Then drain water and pat dry with a paper towel.
  3. Add the oil, salt, pepper and garlic powder in the sliced potatoes in a bowl. Toss to coat

For Air Fryer:

  1. Arrange the seasoned potato slices on the bottom of your air fryer basket, in a single layer, if possible. The more separated the potatoes, the crispier they will be. If needed, you can also cook the fries in batches. This will depend on the size of your air fryer.
  2. Cook the fries at 375ºF for 10-15 minutes. Toss the fries half way through. If the fries need to be crisper, allow to cook for additional time.

For Pressure Cooker Crisplid:

  1. Place the trivet and the cooking basket with the sliced potato inside the pressure cooker inner stainless steel pot. Try to place the fries in a single layer. If needed, you can also cook the fries in batches.
  2. Now place the crisplid on top of the inner pot using the handle on the crisplid. Plug the crisplid and lower the handle. (Make sure the pressure cooker is unplugged)
  3. Set to 375°F (190°C) and cook potatoes for 10 minutes. Flip fries and continue cooking until crisp, about 10 minutes more. If you like the fries to be crispier, then toss and add 5 more minutes.
  4. Remove the french fries into a serving plate and serve immediately with your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

  • Adjust seasoning after cooking with options like paprika or chili lime for flavor variety.
  • Cook fries in batches if necessary to keep them separated and crispy.
  • Soaking potato strips in water before cooking reduces starch and helps achieve a crisp exterior.
