Instant Pot Applesauce
Description
This applesauce recipe combines sweet apples like Gala or Fuji with tart varieties such as Granny Smith to balance flavor. Apples are peeled, cored, and chunked before being placed in the Instant Pot with water, lemon juice, and ground cinnamon. High pressure cooking softens the fruit in five minutes, followed by a natural pressure release to maintain moisture and flavor.
After opening, the cooked apples are blended to a smooth consistency using an immersion blender or alternative blender. Additional brown sugar can be stirred in to adjust sweetness as preferred, creating a versatile applesauce suitable for snacking or cooking.
The applesauce stores well in the refrigerator for up to two weeks. Alternative cooking methods such as slow cooker or stovetop simmering are possible, but the Instant Pot version offers speed and convenience.
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 lbs apple such as Gala, Fuji, Golden delicious, honeycrisp, etc, sweet
- 1 1/2 lbs apple such as granny smith, pink lady or braeburn, tart
- 1/2 cup water
- 2-3 Tbsp lemon juice (juice from approximately 1 lemon)
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 cup light brown sugar
Instructions
PREP APPLES
- Peel and core apples, then slice into large chunks.
ADD TO INSTANT POT
- Add apple pieces to inner pot of an Instant Pot. Add water, lemon juice and cinnamon and stir.
PRESSURE COOK
- Secure lid and set the valve to “sealing”. Set to pressure cook on high for 5 minutes.
- When pressure cooking is finished, let pressure release on it’s own for 15-20 minutes, releasing any remaining pressure after that amount of time.
BLEND
- Remove lid. Use an immersion blender (or transfer to a regular blender/food processor) to puree until smooth.
TASTE AND COOL
- Taste applesauce, and if not sweet enough, stir in additional brown sugar.
- Let cool, then place in airtight containers, seal, and refrigerate for up to 2 weeks.
Notes
- Approximately 1 1/2 pounds of apples equals about 4 medium to large apples.
- Applesauce can be prepared in a slow cooker on low for 6 hours or on the stove by simmering until soft for 20-25 minutes.
- Use an immersion blender or regular blender to achieve your preferred applesauce consistency.
