Instant Pot Applesauce Recipe

This homemade applesauce recipe uses apples and pears cooked with cinnamon sticks, nutmeg, salt, lemon juice, and water in an Instant Pot. The slow release and blending process produces a smooth, flavorful applesauce with a warm spice profile. The method is simple and peel-free, yielding a natural, homemade fruit sauce ready for eating or preserving.

Description

The Instant Pot Applesauce combines apples and pears, cored and cut but unpeeled, cooked together with cinnamon sticks, nutmeg, salt, lemon juice, and water. Simmering under pressure for five minutes, followed by a natural pressure release, softens the fruit for easy blending. Using an immersion blender or another blending method creates a sauce with your preferred texture, from chunky to smooth.

The cinnamon sticks and nutmeg infuse warm, subtle spices, complemented by lemon juice to enhance freshness and balance the sweetness of the fruit. Leaving the peels on increases the nutritional content and adds slight texture to the sauce.

This applesauce can be stored in glass jars and refrigerated, canned, or frozen. Remember to leave headspace in jars if freezing to allow for expansion. It works well as a snack, dessert, or ingredient in baking.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 5 apple
  • 2 pear
  • 5 cinnamon sticks four-inch long
  • ½ teaspoon nutmeg
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoons lemon juice
  • ½ cup water

Instructions

  1. Core the apples and pears, and cut into large pieces. No need to peel them. Place in Instant Pot.
  2. Add all other ingredients; nutmeg, salt, lemon juice and water. Mix ingredients and top with cinnamon sticks.
  3. Secure the lid and make sure vent is set to Sealing. Cook on Manual for 5 minutes. When Instant Pot beeps, allow for a Natural Release for 15 minutes.
  4. At this point, you can release any remaining pressure and open the lid. Use an immersion blender to process sauce to desired consistency. Alternatively, you can move contents to a blender or food mill to process. You may have to work in batches.
  5. Store applesauce in glass jars. Extra sauce can be refrigerated, canned, or frozen (be sure to leave space in the top of jar for expansion).
