Instant Pot Dirty Rice

Instant Pot Dirty Rice is a flavorful one-pot dish combining ground beef, aromatic vegetables, and seasonings mixed with white rice and cooked under pressure. The use of Cajun spices, herbs, and sautéed vegetables infuses the rice with a savory, slightly spicy profile. Garnishes like parsley and green onion add freshness and color to the hearty rice dish that works well as a side or main meal.

Description

This recipe for Instant Pot Dirty Rice starts by sautéing ground beef in the Instant Pot, breaking it up to cook through and develop browning. Diced celery, onion, and green pepper are added and cooked until soft to build a base of aromatic vegetables. The cooking pot is then deglazed if needed to loosen browned bits from the bottom, preventing burns during pressure cooking.

Seasonings including Cajun spice blend, thyme, oregano, and salt are stirred in before adding long grain white rice and beef broth. The mixture is sealed and cooked under high pressure for 6 minutes, allowing the rice to absorb the flavors and cook evenly with the meat and vegetables. Once pressure is released, the dish is ready to serve garnished with chopped parsley and green onion, enhancing color and freshness.

Though original recipe suggests white rice, jasmine or basmati rice may be used as alternatives, while brown rice is not recommended due to longer cooking times affecting texture. Ground poultry or sausage can also substitute the beef with similar results. The dish makes a hearty and savory accompaniment or standalone meal suitable for a variety of palates.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/2 cup celery 2 stalks, chopped
  • 1/2 cup onion chopped
  • 1/2 cup green pepper (1/2 pepper), chopped
  • 1 Tablespoon Cajun spice
  • 1 teaspoon thyme
  • 1 teaspoon oregano
  • 1 teaspoon salt or to taste
  • 1 cup long grain white rice
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • parsley to garnish
  • green onion to garnish

Instructions

  1. Set the Instant Pot on Saute and let it heat for 2 minutes. Add the ground beef and stir, breaking it up into smaller pieces. Cook for 5 minutes.
  2. Add the celery, onion and green pepper. Stir to combine and cook for another 3 minutes, then turn the pressure cooker off.
  3. If you want to drain the grease out of the Instant Pot do it now. I don't bother.
  4. Deglaze the Instant Pot if necessary. I don't find it necessary with this dish - but check to be sure. If there are bits of browned meat or vegetables stuck to the bottom of the Instant Pot then you need to deglaze it. To deglaze add 1/4 cup water or broth and stir to release any browned bits on the bottom of the pot.
  5. Add the Cajun spice, thyme, oregano and salt. Then add the rice and beef broth. Stir to mix well.
  6. Put the lid on the Instant Pot, checking to make sure the seal is in the lid and the valve is shut. Set it on Manual, high pressure for 6 minutes.
  7. It will take about 10 minutes for it to reach pressure. Once it is done cooking let the pressure release naturally for 10 minutes. Then release any remaining pressure and serve.
  8. Garnish with parsley and green onions.

Notes

  • You may substitute white jasmine or basmati rice for the long grain white rice without altering the cooking time drastically.
  • Using brown rice is not recommended as it requires longer cooking, which can affect the texture of the beef in the dish.
  • Ground chicken, pork, or sausage can be used in place of ground beef for variations in flavor.
