Instant Pot Spiral Ham Recipe

Report
This Instant Pot Spiral Ham recipe offers a straightforward way to warm and glaze a pre-cooked spiral ham. The ham is wrapped in foil with brown sugar, maple syrup (or honey), and pineapple juice, then cooked on high pressure with added time to account for the foil. The result is a tender, sweet glaze-infused ham that can be prepared more quickly than in a traditional oven.

Description

The method involves placing an 8-quart Instant Pot’s trivet and adding water to create steam for pressure cooking. The spiral ham is rubbed with brown sugar, drizzled with maple syrup or honey and pineapple juice inside a foil pouch, which traps the glaze components during cooking. Cooking time is calculated as 2 minutes per pound plus an additional 10 minutes due to the heavy-duty foil wrap, ensuring even heating.

After pressure cooking and a natural release period, the ham is removed carefully due to the hot foil. The glaze should be tender and infused, with the ham reaching an internal temperature of 145°F to ensure safe serving. This method simplifies a traditional baked spiral ham while incorporating a sweet and tangy finish.

When using standard (lighter) foil instead of heavy-duty foil, reducing the additional cook time by 5 minutes is recommended for better results.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 5-8 pound spiral ham
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup maple syrup or honey
  • 1 cup pineapple juice
  • 1 cup water

Instructions

  1. Place the trivet with the handles in an 8 quart instant pot.
  2. Pour the water into the instant pot.
  3. Lay out a large piece of foil on the counter.
  4. Place the ham in the middle of the foil and fold up the sides of the foil to make a bowl for the ham.  Rub the brown sugar over the ham and pour the maple syrup (or honey) and pineapple juice over the top making sure that all the ingredients stay in the foil.
  5. Secure the foil warp around the ham.
  6. Then place the foil wrapped ham in the instant pot on top of the trivet.
  7. Seal the instant pot and cook on high pressure for 2 minutes per pound of ham and add 10 minutes because of the foil.  (I cooked a 7 pound ham and cooked it for 24 minutes.)
  8. Then allow the pressure to release naturally for at least 10 minutes and then do a quick release after this time. Make sure that the ham reaches an internal temperature of 145 degrees F. I use a digital thermometer.
  9. Carefully remove the ham from the instant pot (the foil will be hot) and slice.  Enjoy!

Notes

  • Adjust cooking time if using different foil types: add 10 minutes for heavy-duty foil, 5 minutes for thin foil.
  • Use a digital thermometer to ensure the ham reaches an internal temperature of 145°F before serving.
  • Carefully handle the foil-wrapped ham as it will be hot when removing from the Instant Pot.
