Instant Pot Split Pea Soup
Description
The Instant Pot Split Pea Soup begins by sautéing onion, carrots, and celery in olive oil and butter to build a flavor base. Minced garlic is then added before combining with vegetable or chicken broth, green split peas, smoked paprika, ground cumin, and optional chopped smoked ham. The mixture is cooked under high pressure for 15 minutes, followed by a natural pressure release, which allows the peas to soften thoroughly and flavors to meld.
The resulting soup is thick and creamy from the cooked peas, with savory undertones imparted by the ham and spices. The vegetables contribute subtle sweetness and texture. This recipe is flexible, allowing the inclusion of a ham bone or pork hock for deeper flavor, but the simple chopped ham works well for a quick addition.
This soup pairs well with rustic bread or can be served as a filling meal on its own. It thickens over time in the fridge, so reheating with additional broth may be necessary. Using low-sodium broth is advisable if salt intake is a concern because ham adds saltiness.
Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 1/2 medium onion chopped
- 2 medium carrot chopped
- 2 ticks celery chopped
- 2 cloves garlic minced
- 6 cups vegetable broth or chicken broth
- 1 pound green split peas
- 1 pound smoked ham chopped (optional)
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1/4 teaspoon cumin ground
- salt to taste
- black pepper to taste
Instructions
- Add the oil, butter, onion, carrots, and celery to your Instant Pot. Press the sauté button and cook for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Stir in the garlic, followed by the broth, split peas, ham (if using), smoked paprika, and cumin.
- Give it a good stir, then close the lid, make sure the valve is on "sealing", and then set the timer to cook for 15 minutes on high pressure. It'll take about 15 minutes for the Instant Pot to come up to pressure.
- Once the countdown has finished, let the pressure release naturally for 15 minutes. You can then do a quick release if you wish, or just let it naturally release for the rest of the time.
- Season with salt & pepper if needed.
Notes
- Leftover ham can be used for added flavor; alternatively, add a ham bone or pork hock weighing up to about 2 pounds.
- Use low-sodium broth if monitoring salt intake due to salty ham content.
- The soup thickens as it cools; thin with additional broth when reheating if needed.
- Keep in mind that the Instant Pot requires time to come to pressure and to release pressure naturally before opening.
