Italian Burgers
Description
These Italian Burgers start with a blend of ground beef combined with shredded mozzarella cheese and seasonings including Worcestershire sauce, garlic salt, pepper, dried onion flakes, and oregano. The cheese inside the patty keeps it moist and adds richness. Patties are grilled or broiled until cooked through, then topped with the remaining mozzarella, which melts under a covered grill. The buttered buns are toasted until golden, adding texture and flavor.
The burgers are finished by spreading marinara sauce on the bun and placing the cheesy beef patties inside. This creates a layered flavor combining the savory meat, melted mozzarella, aromatic herbs, and rich tomato sauce reminiscent of Italian cuisine.
To ensure juicy burgers, use ground beef with an 80/20 fat ratio. Taking care not to overhandle the meat when forming patties preserves tenderness. Pressing a dimple in the center of each patty helps maintain shape during cooking. Avoid pressing down on patties as they cook to retain juices.
Ingredients
- 1 c. mozzarella cheese shredded
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1/4 tsp garlic salt
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
- 1 tsp dried onion flakes
- 1/8 tsp oregano
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1/2 c. marinara sauce
- 4 Buns
- butter for buns
Instructions
- In a large bowl combine 1/2 c. Mozzarella cheese and seasonings. Add beef and mix until combines. Shape into four patties about 1/2 in thick.
- Grill burgers over medium heat or broil 4 inches from heat sources of 4-5 minutes on each side or until thermometer reads 160 degrees. Sprinkle with remaining cheese and grill covered 1-2 minutes longer or until cheese is melted. Remove from grill.
- Butter inside of each bun and place buns, butter side up, on grill and grill until tops are light golden brown. Remove from grill, top with burger, top burger with marinara sauce.
Notes
- Use ground beef with an 80/20 fat content for juicier burgers, although the mozzarella added allows for leaner meat if desired.
- Grate mozzarella from a block for better melting compared to pre-shredded, which contains anti-clumping agents.
- Keep ground beef cold before forming patties and wet your hands with cold water to prevent sticking.
- Form patties gently to avoid tough burgers and press a thumb dimple in the center to prevent them from puffing and shrinking while cooking.
- Do not press patties during cooking to preserve moisture and juiciness.
