Italian Hoagie Recipe
Description
This hoagie begins by slicing long Italian rolls partially through and removing some of the interior dough for a lighter bite. A simple vinaigrette of red wine vinegar, dried oregano, and quality Italian olive oil is whisked to emulsify. A small amount of this dressing is spread inside the rolls.
Thin slices of provolone cheese and an assortment of Italian cured meats—prosciutto, Capicola, Genoa salami, and spicy soppressata—are layered into the bread. Fresh tomato slices, thinly sliced onions, finely shredded iceberg or romaine lettuce, and a spread of cherry pepper hoagie spread add freshness, crunch, and a bit of heat. Additional drizzle of the vinaigrette inside the sandwich completes the flavor.
Cut in half for sharing or eating on the go, this Italian hoagie highlights classic sandwich ingredients assembled for balanced taste and texture. Omitting red wine vinegar still produces a tasty sandwich by combining olive oil and oregano.
Ingredients
- 1 Tablespoon red wine vinegar optional
- 1/2 teaspoon oregano dried
- 2 Tablespoons olive oil Italian
- 2 long hoagie rolls Italian
- 1/4 lb prosciutto
- 1/4 lb Capicola
- 1/4 lb genoa salami
- 1/8 lb soprassata salami hot
- 1/4 lb provolone cheese sharp, thinly sliced
- 1 large tomato thinly sliced, juicy, ripe
- 1 small onion red or white, thinly sliced
- 1/2 cup iceberg lettuce finely shredded, or romaine lettuce
- 1/4 cup cherry pepper hoagie spread hot
Instructions
- Slice the rolls lengthwise, cutting only half way through. Remove the thick, fluffy dough center of the bread and discard it. Set rolls aside.
- In a small bowl whisk together the vinegar and oregano; slowly add in the oil, whisking as you pour to emulsify the mixture.
- Drizzle a small amount of the oil/vinegar mixture on the rolls, then layer the cheese and meats.
- Top with the tomatoes, onions, lettuce, then peppers. Drizzle with additional oil/vinegar, cut in half, and serve!
Notes
- If you omit the red wine vinegar, just whisk together olive oil and oregano for a milder dressing inside the hoagie.
