Italian Sausage Pasta
Description
Italian Sausage Pasta features mild Italian sausage cooked with garlic, optional onion, and crushed red pepper flakes to build a flavorful base. Drained stewed tomatoes and heavy cream are added along with dried basil and Parmesan cheese to create a luscious sauce that is simmered until it thickens. The cooked bow tie pasta is mixed into the sauce, ensuring each piece is coated in the creamy tomato mixture. This pasta dish balances savory sausage and creamy textures for a satisfying meal.
The dish is versatile; it can be served over traditional pasta, or used as a sauce for alternatives such as white rice, cauliflower rice, mashed potatoes, or baked potatoes. Sautéed vegetables like zucchini, bell peppers, mushrooms, or spinach may be mixed in to enhance texture and nutrition. Different types of sausage, such as chicken, turkey, or spicy varieties, can replace the mild Italian sausage to adjust the flavor profile.
Leftovers store well in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to four days or in the freezer for three to four months. Reheating on the stovetop over low heat with occasional stirring keeps the texture intact, and adding a small amount of cream can help refresh the sauce. Microwaving in short increments is also possible for convenience.
Ingredients
- 1 (16-ounce) package bow tie pasta
- 1 pound Italian sausage mild
- ½ cup onion optional, chopped
- 1½ teaspoons garlic minced
- ½ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes optional
- 2 (14.5-ounce) cans stewed tomatoes drained and chopped, Italian style
- 1½ cups heavy cream
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon basil dried
- 1 cup Parmesan Cheese divided, shredded
Instructions

- Meanwhile, in a large skillet over medium heat, cook sausage, onion, garlic, and pepper flakes, stirring, for 4–5 minutes, or until meat is no longer pink. Drain excess fat.
- Stir in tomatoes, cream, salt, basil, and ½ cup Parmesan and bring to a boil.
- Reduce heat and simmer, uncovered and stirring occasionally, for 6-8 minutes or until thickened.
- Add pasta to sausage mixture and toss.
- Garnish with remaining ½ cup Parmesan before serving.
Notes
- Store leftover pasta in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days or freeze for 3-4 months.
- Reheat gently on the stovetop over low heat, stirring regularly; add a little cream to loosen the sauce if needed.
- This sausage sauce works well over rice, mashed potatoes, cauliflower rice, or baked potatoes as an alternative to pasta.
- Adding sautéed vegetables like zucchini, bell peppers, mushrooms, or spinach can add flavor and nutrition.
- You can substitute the mild Italian sausage with chicken, turkey, or spicy sausage depending on taste preferences.
