Italian Sausage Pasta Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 (16-ounce) package bow tie pasta
  • 1 pound Italian sausage mild
  • ½ cup onion optional, chopped
  • teaspoons garlic minced
  • ½ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes optional
  • 2 (14.5-ounce) cans stewed tomatoes drained and chopped, Italian style
  • cups heavy cream
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon basil dried
  • 1 cup Parmesan Cheese divided, shredded

Instructions

  1. Cook pasta according to package directions. Drain and set aside.
  2. Meanwhile, in a large skillet over medium heat, cook sausage, onion, garlic, and pepper flakes, stirring, for 4–5 minutes, or until meat is no longer pink. Drain excess fat.
  3. Stir in tomatoes, cream, salt, basil, and ½ cup Parmesan and bring to a boil.
  4. Reduce heat and simmer, uncovered and stirring occasionally, for 6-8 minutes or until thickened.
  5. Add pasta to sausage mixture and toss.
  6. Garnish with remaining ½ cup Parmesan before serving.

Notes

  • Variations: Swap out the mild Italian sausage for chicken sausage, turkey sausage or spicy sausage, or substitute mozzarella or a blend of provolone, fontina, Romano, and Asiago cheeses for the Parmesan. You can also add vegetables such as zucchini, bell peppers, mushrooms or spinach in Step 3.
