Italian Sausage Seasoning Recipe
Description
Italian Sausage Seasoning Recipe provides a custom blend of dried herbs and spices with fresh garlic and onion optional for seasoning ground meats. The ingredients include parsley, Italian seasoning, black pepper, fennel seed, paprika, red pepper flakes, salt, garlic, and onion. The method involves combining the seasonings then mixing them into 2 pounds of ground beef or other ground meat and cooking as desired. Leftover seasoning can be stored separately at room temperature, while any cooked meat with seasoning should be refrigerated. This approach offers control over the flavor and spice level when preparing sausage dishes at home.
The flavor is typical of Italian sausage with the sweet licorice note from fennel seed, moderate heat from red pepper flakes, and earthiness from paprika and Italian herbs. The fresh garlic and onion add pungency and moisture when used fresh, enhancing the overall profile. Because the seasoning is added directly to ground meat, it flavors the dish throughout rather than just on the surface.
This seasoning can be used in place of store-bought Italian sausage for pasta sauces, pizzas, or casseroles. Adjust the ratio of ingredients to suit personal taste, especially the level of spice.
If preparing a large batch of seasoning ahead, omit fresh garlic and onion and rely only on dried forms to allow stable pantry storage. Mixing fresh ingredients before using ensures optimal flavor in small quantities.
Ingredients
- 2 teaspoons parsley dried
- 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning
- 1 1/2 teaspoons black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon fennel seed (we use whole, but you can crush the 1/2 teaspoon of whole seeds or use ground fennel if you'd like)
- 1/2 teaspoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes
- 2 teaspoons salt
- 1 tablespoon garlic we use fresh if not making a big batch, minced
- 1 teaspoon onion we use fresh if not making a big batch, minced
- 2 pounds ground beef (or turkey, chicken or pork)
Instructions
- In a small bowl, combine all of the seasonings. Add the seasonings to 2 pounds of ground beef. Brown or cook as desired in a large skillet.
- Store any leftovers in the refrigerator in an airtight container.
- The seasoning mix itself can be stored at room temperature, in an airtight container in the pantry.
Notes
- You can omit fresh garlic and onion by using all dried seasonings when making a large batch for pantry storage.
- Store the seasoning mix in an airtight container at room temperature to maintain its potency.
- After seasoning your ground meat, cook it fully and refrigerate leftovers promptly.
