Jalapeño Popper Pigs in a Blanket
Description
This recipe assembles small cocktail sausages wrapped individually in crescent dough strips layered with shredded sharp cheddar, cream cheese, and fresh jalapeño slices for heat. The dough is rolled around the fillings to encase them, then brushed with an egg wash to encourage browning and sprinkled with poppy seeds for crunch and appearance.
They are cooked in the oven or air fryer until the dough is golden and cooked through, resulting in a snack that blends spicy, creamy, and savory flavors with soft, flaky pastry. The jalapeños provide a fresh heat that pairs well with the rich cheese and sausage.
Best served warm, these bites work well as party appetizers or casual finger food. Leftovers can be refrigerated and reheated in the air fryer or oven to restore crispness but are not recommended for freezing.
Ingredients
- 1 can crescent roll dough
- 1 (14-ounce) package cocktail sausages smoked
- 1 cup cheddar cheese shredded sharp
- 4 ounces cream cheese softened
- 1-2 jalapeños or more, depending on size and how thick you want your pieces of jalapeno to be, with stems and seeds removed, then sliced
- 1 egg for an egg wash, large; plus 1 tablespoon water
- 1 1/2 Tablespoons poppy seeds
Instructions
- Preheat the air fryer to 300°F or oven to 375°F.
- Cut the crescent dough into small 4-inch strips.
- Sprinkle about 1 teaspoon of shredded cheese on each strip of dough, then place 1 teaspoon of cream cheese on top. Add 1-2 pieces of sliced jalapeno, then top with one cocktail weiner.
- Roll the crescent roll dough around the cocktail weiner. Repeat until all of the lil' smokies have been wrapped up.
- Line the air fryer basket or a baking sheet with parchment paper, depending on which cooking method you are using. Add each pig in a blanket to the basket, leaving space so they don't touch. You will need to cook them in more than one batch if using an air fryer depending on how big your air fryer is if using that method.
- Make an egg wash by beating the egg and water together in a bowl. Brush the tops and sides of each pig in a blanket with the egg wash, then sprinkle with the poppy seeds.
- Place the basket into the air fryer and cook for 8 minutes in the air fryer or in the oven for 11-13 minutes until golden brown and the cheese is melted. Cool for a few minutes before serving.
Notes
- Serve these pigs in a blanket immediately for the best texture; refrigerate leftovers for up to 3-4 days and reheat in oven or air fryer to crisp.
- Puff pastry can replace crescent dough for a flakier crust; adjust baking temperature and time accordingly.
- Poppy seeds are optional, with sesame seeds or everything bagel seasoning as possible substitutes for garnish.
- A jalapeño jelly or ranch dressing pairs well as dipping sauces to complement the spicy filling.
- Adding cooked, crumbled bacon to the filling is an easy upgrade for extra flavor.
