Kale Chips
Description
This recipe achieves crispy Kale Chips by drying bite-sized, well-dried kale pieces coated with olive oil, kosher salt, and nutritional yeast, which adds a subtle cheesy taste. Preparing the kale thoroughly dry is essential for crispiness. The chips are cooked in a dehydrator at 160°F for 2-3 hours, producing a crunchy texture without frying.
The flavor balance combines the earthiness of kale with nutty, savory notes from the nutritional yeast and a slight saltiness. The olive oil helps the seasoning adhere and provides some richness. This snack offers a vegetable-based alternative to traditional chips with a distinctive crisp texture.
For those without a dehydrator, alternative oven or air fryer methods are provided, allowing flexibility in preparation. Variations like adjusting salt or adding other seasonings are encouraged to suit personal taste. The chips are best eaten fresh but can be stored in airtight containers for a few days before losing crunch.
Ingredients
- 2 kale cut and cleaned, bunches
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1 tablespoon nutritional yeast
- 1-2 teaspoons olive oil
Instructions
- Make sure the kale is completely dry. Rip into bite sized pieces.
- Drizzle a bit of olive oil over kale and mix well. Sprinkle on salt and nutritional yeast. Mix well again and add to dehydrator trays in a single layer on each tray.
- Set dehydrator to 160 degrees and cook for 2-3 hrs until nice and crispy!
Notes
- Let kale cool completely before storing to maintain crispness.
- Store chips in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3-4 days to preserve crunch.
- Adjust salt and nutritional yeast amounts based on your taste preferences.
- To make without a dehydrator, bake at 275°F for about 20 minutes, flipping halfway, or air fry at 350°F for 3-4 minutes.
