Kale Chips Recipe

Kale Chips are made by coating large kale leaves in grapeseed oil and seasoning with coarse sea salt before baking at a low temperature until crisp. This process turns the kale into light, crunchy chips that retain some of the leafy flavor without being greasy. Baking at 300 degrees allows the kale to dry out gradually, resulting in crispy edges without burning. They offer a simple way to enjoy kale as a crunchy snack or side.

Description

This Kale Chips recipe emphasizes simple preparation: after washing and drying the kale, the leaves are torn into pieces and coated evenly with grapeseed oil to promote crispness and prevent sticking. Coarse sea salt is sprinkled for seasoning. The kale is arranged in a single layer on a baking sheet and baked at 300°F for about 20 minutes, or until the leaves become uniformly crisp.

The texture is brittle and dry, similar to other vegetable chips but lighter and less fat-heavy than fried snacks. The baking process preserves the green color and subtle natural flavors of the kale. Cooling the chips for five minutes before removing helps them set and reduces breakage. Although some chips will lie flat, they lift off easily once cooled.

Kale Chips can be enjoyed as a healthy snack alternative or served alongside sandwiches and dips. Their simplicity and minimal seasoning allow the natural earthy taste of kale to shine. Alternate oils such as avocado oil, canola oil, or olive oil can be substituted without changing the basic preparation.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 kale large head, green
  • 1 Tbsp grapeseed oil
  • sea salt coarse

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 300 degrees F and lightly oil a baking sheet
  2. Wash and pat dry the kale leaves
  3. Tear the leaves off the stems (save the stems for smoothies) and then tear them into pieces.
  4. Put all the leaves in a large bowl (or two) and drizzle oil over them. Toss the leaves using your hands in order to coat them.
  5. Spread the leaves over the baking sheet (I had to do this in two batches) and bake for 20 minutes or until crispy.
  6. Remove chips from the oven and let cool for 5 minutes. Some of the chips will likely be laying flat against the cookie sheet, but will come off easily once you allow them to cool off (trying to remove the chips before cooling them may result in a lot of breakage).

Notes

  • Alternative oils like avocado, canola, or olive oil can be used instead of grapeseed oil.
