Kalua Pork
Description
This Kalua Pork recipe centers on a 5-pound boneless pork butt infused with minced garlic, grated ginger, salt, and hickory liquid smoke to simulate the classic Hawaiian preparation. The pork is slow cooked for 8 to 9 hours until it becomes tender enough to shred comfortably with a fork. The method can use a slow cooker or an oven set at 225°F to maintain low and slow heat.
The resulting meat has a mellow smokiness accompanied by fresh ginger and garlic notes, with the salt seasoning enhancing the natural pork flavor. After shredding, the pork is mixed with its cooking juices to keep it moist and flavorful. This preparation fits well as a main protein served plain, on rice, or inside sandwich buns, capturing the essence of traditional kalua pork without a specialized cooking pit.
The recipe notes recommend covering tightly during oven roasting and provide an alternative method to the slow cooker. Maintaining the low temperature and extended cooking time is key for tender shreddable pork.
