Kalua Pork Recipe

Kalua pork is a slow-cooked shredded pork dish made by rubbing a large pork butt with liquid smoke and salt, then cooking it low and slow in a crockpot for many hours. This technique tenderizes the meat until it pulls apart easily, infused with savory, smoky seasoning from the liquid smoke and salt. It's a straightforward recipe ideal for batch cooking and serves well as a warm flavorful meat addition to plates or sandwiches.

Description

Kalua Pork Recipe uses a 7-pound pork butt rubbed with liquid smoke and sea salt, slow-cooked fat side up in a crockpot for 10 to 12 hours. The low, slow cooking breaks down the tough fibers, resulting in very tender, easily shredded pork with a subtle smoky flavor from the liquid smoke. Cooking in the crockpot overnight or all day is a hands-off approach that yields juicy meat infused with its own cooking juices.

When done, the pork is shredded directly in the slow cooker and served hot. This method keeps it moist and flavorful from the retained cooking liquid. The simplicity of ingredients enhances the pork's natural flavor without overpowering it.

Leftover pork should be stored with some cooking juices in an airtight container to maintain moisture and flavor. It can be refrigerated for 3 to 4 days or frozen up to 6 months. Keeping the juices with the pork prevents it from drying out during storage or reheating, preserving its tender texture.
