Kalua Pork Recipe
Description
Kalua Pork Recipe uses a 7-pound pork butt rubbed with liquid smoke and sea salt, slow-cooked fat side up in a crockpot for 10 to 12 hours. The low, slow cooking breaks down the tough fibers, resulting in very tender, easily shredded pork with a subtle smoky flavor from the liquid smoke. Cooking in the crockpot overnight or all day is a hands-off approach that yields juicy meat infused with its own cooking juices.
When done, the pork is shredded directly in the slow cooker and served hot. This method keeps it moist and flavorful from the retained cooking liquid. The simplicity of ingredients enhances the pork's natural flavor without overpowering it.
Leftover pork should be stored with some cooking juices in an airtight container to maintain moisture and flavor. It can be refrigerated for 3 to 4 days or frozen up to 6 months. Keeping the juices with the pork prevents it from drying out during storage or reheating, preserving its tender texture.
Ingredients
- 7 pound pork butt or shoulder, bone in
- 1 tablespoon liquid smoke
- 1 tablespoon sea salt or kosher salt
Instructions
- Place pork roast fat side up in your slow cooker. Rub all over with Liquid Smoke and salt.
- Cook on low for 10-12 hours (I like to let mine cook overnight or start it early in the morning).
- Shred meat in the slow cooker and serve hot.
Notes
- Save the cooking juices to keep the pork moist when storing leftovers.
- Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days or freeze for up to 6 months.
