Ketie's Smoked Salmon and Goat Cheese Appetizers

Ketie's Smoked Salmon and Goat Cheese Appetizers feature thinly sliced smoked salmon mixed with lemon juice, capers, red onion, and olive oil, paired with creamy goat cheese served on bread or crackers. This combination creates a savory, tangy spread ideal for hors d'oeuvres or light snacks.

Description

These appetizers blend smoked salmon torn into bite-sized pieces with fresh lemon juice, chopped capers, diced red onion, and a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil to create a flavorful topping. The ingredients are combined gently to preserve salmon texture and layered with goat cheese on bread or crackers for serving.

The dish balances smoky, salty salmon with creamy, mild goat cheese and sharpness from lemon and onion. Chilling the salmon mixture for a couple of hours enhances flavors and texture. The olives and capers add briny elements that complement the delicate smokiness. This appetizer is designed for assembling just before serving to maintain freshness and contrast.

Serving the cheese alongside the salmon mixture allows guests to customize bites. This appetizer fits well within a casual gathering or as part of a cocktail party spread.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 package smoked salmon (thinly sliced, good quality)
  • ¼ tsp lemon juice (freshly squeezed)
  • 3 tsp capers (rinsed)
  • ½ Tbsp extra virgin olive oil (a drizzle)
  • 1 small red onion (diced into small cubes)
  • 4 oz goat cheese (any size you prefer, plain or flavored, like Boursin)
  • bread and/or crackers to serve, slices

Instructions

  1. Place the pieces of smoked salmon in a bowl, torn into bite sized pieces. Squeeze some lemon juice over the salmon, then roughly chop some capers, add it to the bowl with some onion, and follow with a drizzle of the olive oil. Mix all of these ingredients together by hand.
  2. Arrange the smoked salmon on a serving tray, leaving space to put the goat cheese (and crackers or bread if you want them on the same tray together.)
  3. Drizzle the salmon with more lemon juice, olive oil, some whole capers, and the diced red onion.
  4. Cover and set aside for 2 hours (place in the fridge if it will be longer than 2 hours.) Place the cheese and crackers/bread on the plate just before serving.
  5. To serve, spread some cheese on a piece of bread or a cracker and top with a piece of salmon.

Notes

  • Soft cheeses other than goat cheese can be used as a substitute according to preference.
  • Nutrition information was calculated considering bread as the serving base rather than crackers.
