Kielbasa and Cucumber Crostini + Canapé Roundup!
Description
This appetizer starts by lightly buttering diagonal slices of a baguette and toasting them briefly to develop a slight crispness without becoming hard. A spread is made from cream cheese mixed with finely chopped green onion, dill, pressed garlic, and black pepper to create a fresh herbaceous base. Each crostini is generously topped with this spread while the bread is still warm for better absorption and flavor melding.
Thin slices of kielbasa provide a smoky, meaty topping complemented by the cool crunch of sliced English cucumber. The canapé is finished with additional sprigs of dill and sliced green onion as garnish. Optional caviar can be added for a touch of luxury and extra texture.
This crostini is suitable for finger food occasions and pairs well with light drinks or as part of a canapé platter. The toasted bread and creamy spread balance the smoked sausage and fresh veggies. The recipe is customizable with other cured meats like prosciutto or salami as alternatives.
Ingredients
- 1 baguette cut on the diagonal into 1/3" slices, long
- 2 Tsp butter melted for toasting the bread
For the Spread:
- 8 oz cream cheese
- 2 green onion 3-4 Tbsp) finely chopped, plus more for garnish, stalks
- 1/4 cup dill finely chopped plus more for garnish, chopped
- 1 garlic pressed, large clove
- 1/8 tsp black pepper freshly ground
Toppings:
- 1/2 lb kielbasa you can also use prosciutto, or even a good quality salami
- 1/2 English cucumber
- caviar optional (my sister-in-law used caviar on top of canapes at our Christmas party and it made them extra fancy, for garnish
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350˚F. Use a pastry brush to lightly butter both sides. Bake for 5 minutes then remove from the oven. You just want to toast them slightly, not turn them into croutons. ;)
- In a small bowl, combine 8 oz cream cheese, chopped green onion, chopped dill, 1 pressed clove of garlic and 1/8 tsp pepper. Use a fork to mash the herbs into the cream cheese. Spread a generous amount onto each crostini. It's ok to spread while the bread is still warm.
- Top with thinly sliced kielbasa and cucumber and add a few sprigs of dill and sliced onion for garnish.
