Kings Hawaiian Rolls Recipe

Report
Kings Hawaiian Rolls are soft, slightly sweet yeast rolls made with water, sugar, yeast, oil, salt, and flour. The dough is mixed and kneaded, allowed to rise in two stages, shaped into nine rolls, then baked until golden brown. The finished rolls have a tender crumb with a slightly sweet flavor, making them suitable for sandwiches or as dinner rolls.

Description

This recipe for Kings Hawaiian Rolls mimics the classic soft, sweet rolls known for their fluffy texture and mild sweetness. The dough begins with activating yeast in warm water and sugar, followed by mixing in oil, salt, and flour to form a smooth dough. After kneading, the dough is coated with oil and allowed to rise until doubled. It is then divided, shaped into nine balls placed in a baking dish, and given a second rise until puffy.

The rolls are baked at 350°F for about 15 minutes until golden on top. Butter is applied immediately after baking to enhance flavor and provide a soft crust. The recipe yields rolls that are tender with a subtle sweetness, characteristic of Hawaiian rolls.

These rolls are ideal as dinner accompaniments, sandwich buns, or snacks. Their soft texture and slightly sweet taste pair well with savory fillings or simply with butter.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 cup water warm
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 packet active dry yeast
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour

Instructions

  1. Mix together water, sugar and yeast. Let stand about 10 minutes, or until yeast begins to activate (small bubbles will form).
  2. In a stand mixer with a dough hook attachment, slowly add in oil, salt and flour. Mix until well incorporated and then continue to knead for about 2-3 minutes.
  3. Oil a glass bowl. Remove dough from mixer bowl and place in the glass bowl, turning to coat with oil. Cover tightly with plastic wrap and let rise for about an hour or until doubled in size.
  4. Spray an 8" x 8" glass dish with cooking spray. Divide the risen dough into 9 similarly sized balls. Arrange in the prepared dish, leaving some space around each ball to allow for rising. Cover tightly and let rise about 30 minutes.
  5. Once risen again, bake rolls in 350F oven for 15 minutes or until golden brown on top. Remove from oven and immediately butter the top of each roll.

Notes

  • The rolls closely resemble the original Hawaiian rolls in taste and texture.
  • The recipe requires time for dough rising but assembling is straightforward.
