Lemon Ginger Turmeric Shots
Description
Lemon Ginger Turmeric Shots blend freshly washed and peeled root ingredients—ginger and turmeric—with peeled citrus fruits including lemon and orange, plus ground black pepper and water. The preparation involves blending these intensely flavored components thoroughly, allowing the mixture to settle so fiber separates out for easier straining. This technique ensures a strained liquid that contains the flavorful juices without excessive pulp. The final shots deliver a balance of spicy, earthy turmeric and ginger with the tartness and sweetness from the citrus.
The texture of the shots is mostly smooth after straining, while the black pepper enhances turmeric's bioavailability and adds mild heat. They are served cold in small portions due to their concentrated and sharp flavor profile. Additionally, freezing the shots in ice cube trays offers convenient use later in smoothies or salad dressings, allowing the recipe to adapt beyond just direct consumption.
Handling turmeric carefully is advised since it stains skin and surfaces. To reduce bitterness, juicing citrus separately before blending is suggested, though this recipe blends whole peeled fruit. Organic ingredients are recommended to avoid pesticide ingestion as the recipe involves consuming raw root produce. Sweetening or diluting the shots can be done to suit personal taste preferences given their spicy nature.
Ingredients
- 5 ounces ginger washed, fresh
- 2 ounces Turmeric washed, fresh
- 3 lemon peeled
- 1 orange peeled
- ½ teaspoon black pepper ground
- 2 cups water
Instructions
- Thoroughly wash the ginger and turmeric. Roughly chop them and add them to the cup of a blender. Add the peeled lemon, peeled orange, black pepper, and water.
- Blend on the highest setting for 1 minute. Let it rest for one minute and then blend for one more minute.
- Allow it to sit in the blender for 5 minutes for the fiber to set to the bottom of the blender as much as possible. This will make the straining process easier.
- Pour the strained liquid into a jar with a lid and place it in the refrigerator.
- When ready to drink, pour 1 to 2 ounces into a glass and enjoy cold.
- You can freeze them in an ice cube tray and add them to smoothies or salad dressings. Or defreeze and drink the shots as you go.
Notes
- Use organic ingredients to avoid pesticides common on root vegetables and citrus.
- To reduce bitterness, juice lemon and orange separately and add juice to blender.
- Sweeten or dilute the shots if the flavor is too pungent for direct sipping.
- Wear gloves and rinse surfaces promptly to prevent turmeric stains.
