Lemonade Iced Tea (Arnold Palmer Drink)
Description
The Lemonade Iced Tea recipe begins by steeping black tea bags in hot water to extract a robust base, then adding sugar while warm to sweeten and allow for complete dissolution. A separate lemon simple syrup is prepared by simmering lemon peels with sugar and water, concentrating the citrus flavor without the bitterness of pith. The tea, lemon juice, and syrup are combined over ice along with lemon slices for garnish.
This drink is cooled and stirred well before serving, offering a balance between the astringency of tea and the tangy, sweet lemon components. It's a popular non-alcoholic refresher ideal for hot weather. Variants include adding a shot of vodka, rum, or bourbon, with specific names like John Daly or Captain Palmer.
Strawberry or other fruit syrups can be used to create fruity adaptations. The drink works well served chilled and is suitable for casual gatherings or as an alternative to plain iced tea or lemonade alone.
Ingredients
Lemonade Iced Tea
- 3 black tea bags family-sized
- 5 cups water
- 1 cup granulated sugar optional
- 1 cup lemon juice fresh
Lemon Simple Syrup
- lemon no pith, peels of 2
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 cup water cold
Instructions
- Make the Iced Tea
- Bring water to a boil in a large pot. Once at a boil, turn the heat off and add the black tea bags. Steep for 10 minutes, then remove the tea bags.
- Add cup of granulated sugar, if using, and stir until it's dissolved completely. Let cool to room temperature.
- Make Lemon Simple Syrup
- Add lemon peels, granulated sugar, and cold water into a medium saucepan over medium high heat.
- Bring the ingredients to a boil, then turn the heat to medium once the sugar is completely dissolved. Let simmer for 10 minutes, then strain out the lemon peels.
- Make the Arnold Palmer
- Add ice and lemon wheels to a large pitcher, then add the lemon juice, brewed tea, and lemon simple syrup to the pitcher.
- Stir well with a long spoon, serve chilled.
Notes
- Infuse strawberry flavor by substituting strawberry simple syrup or using strawberry lemonade for a pink variation.
- Enhance the drink with vodka to make a John Daly, or rum for a Captain Palmer cocktail option.
- Use sweet tea instead of black tea and add bourbon for a Southern Spiked version.
- Mix equal parts lemonade and iced tea for the traditional Arnold Palmer, also known as the SunJoy at Chick-Fil-A.
