Lentil Carrot Veggie Hot Dogs Recipe

This recipe creates plant-based hot dogs using red lentils, grated carrots, and smoked paprika as key ingredients. The mixture is cooked and blended into a thick dough, shaped into hot dog forms, chilled, then pan-fried until golden. The resulting hot dogs have a firm but tender texture and a subtle smoky, savory flavor. They're designed to be served in classic hot dog buns as a meat-free alternative with familiar appearance and mouthfeel.

Description

The Lentil Carrot Veggie Hot Dogs Recipe transforms red lentils and grated carrots into a textured, flavorful hot dog alternative. Lentils provide protein and bulk, while sautéed onions and carrots add moisture and sweetness. Smoked paprika and garlic powder give the hot dogs a gentle smoky and savory note. The mixture is processed to a thick paste and combined with all-purpose flour to create a dough that can be formed into log shapes. After chilling to firm up, the hot dogs are pan-fried on medium-low heat to develop a golden crust without burning.

The frying method produces a hot dog with a crisp exterior and tender interior. These vegetarian hot dogs can be served warm in a bun and complemented with traditional toppings. Their flavor and texture emerge from the cooking technique and the balance of spices combined with the moisture from vegetables and stock.

Since the recipe does not specify storage or freezing tips, it is recommended to serve the hot dogs freshly cooked to enjoy their texture and flavor fully. The use of smoked paprika and garlic powder distinctively colors and seasons the hot dogs compared to simpler veggie patties.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 cup red lentils rinsed, dried, 200g
  • 3 cups vegetable stock 700ml
  • 1 teaspoon olive oil
  • 1 onion finely diced
  • 2 carrot grated, 125g
  • 1 ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • salt
  • black pepper
  • 1 + ¼ cups all-purpose flour 150g, plain
  • 2 teaspoon olive oil

Instructions

  1. Cook the lentils in the stock for 10 minutes or until tender, then drain.
  2. Meanwhile, heat the oil in a frying pan over a medium heat, then add the onion and sautee for a few minutes until translucent but not browned. Add the grated carrot and sautee for 3-5 minutes until soft.
  3. Add the cooked lentils, carrot mixture, spices, salt and pepper to a food processor and whiz until it’s thick and well combined.
  4. Tip the mixture into a bowl and mix in 3 tablespoons of the flour. Add more flour, a tablespoon at a time, until a thick and manageable consistency. You may not need all of the flour.
  5. Roll into hot dog-like shapes, place on a plate, cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
  6. Heat 1 teaspoon of the oil in a frying pan over a medium/low heat and add some of the hot dogs. Fry, gently turning often, until golden. Repeat in batches.
  7. Serve in a hot dog bun.
