Licuado de Nopal (Cactus Smoothie)

Licuado de Nopal is a refreshing smoothie blending cleaned and sliced cactus pads with cucumber, lime juice, water, and optional crushed ice. This mixture provides a hydrating beverage featuring the mild, slightly tangy flavor of nopal complemented by the crispness of cucumber and citrus notes from lime.

Description

This cactus smoothie combines nopal (prickly pear cactus pads), cucumber, lime juice, and water into a smooth, nutritious drink that can be enjoyed chilled. The nopal is cleaned of spines, sliced, and can be stored frozen for convenience. The ingredients are simply blended together, optionally with crushed ice to enhance the coldness and texture.

The resulting smoothie has a mild, slightly tart flavor from the lime and a subtle earthiness from the cactus, balanced by the cool freshness of cucumber. The texture is smooth and drinkable, adaptable by varying the intensity of blending or the amount of water added.

This drink can serve as a hydrating refreshment, especially in warm weather, or as a light, vegetable-based smoothie choice. Altering the sweetness and flavor by adding other fruits like pineapple or mango is possible, but this version focuses on the natural crisp and slightly tangy flavors of the core ingredients.

Ingredients

Servings
  • ½ cup nopal cactus pads cleaned, spines removed, sliced
  • 1/2 cucumber peeled and chopped
  • 1 lime juiced
  • 1 cup water
  • ice optional, crushed

Instructions

  1. Store julienned nopal in snack bags in the freezer. To make one smoothie use only half the bag of nopal.
  2. Place all the ingredients in a blender and blend.

Notes

  • To reduce chunkiness, blend longer or add more water to adjust smoothie consistency.
  • Substituting water with coconut water can add potassium and a subtle sweetness.
  • For added fruitiness and sweetness, consider adding frozen pineapple, mango, bananas, or berries.
