Loaded Au Gratin Potatoes

Loaded Au Gratin Potatoes combine thinly sliced russet potatoes with a creamy mixture of heavy cream, sour cream, and flour, layered with bacon and shredded cheddar cheese. The dish is baked until tender, then topped with additional cheese and bacon for a rich, textured casserole that blends creamy and savory flavors with crispy bacon accents.

Description

This recipe for Loaded Au Gratin Potatoes starts by slicing peeled russet potatoes very thin using a mandolin. A sauce is made by whisking together heavy cream, sour cream, flour, garlic, salt, and pepper. The potatoes are arranged in layers in a buttered casserole dish with the creamy sauce, cooked bacon, and shredded cheddar cheese. The casserole is baked covered to cook the potatoes through, then uncovered to brown the top while additional bacon and cheese are added towards the end of baking.

The result is a hearty casserole with tender, overlapping potato slices enveloped in a rich, creamy sauce. The bacon adds a smoky crunch that contrasts with the soft potatoes and melted cheese. Garlic and black pepper provide subtle seasoning.

This dish works well as a side for meat or poultry or as a filling comfort food main. Garnishing with fresh chives adds a mild onion note and color. Letting the casserole cool slightly before serving helps it set for easier portions.
