Loaded Cheese Fries
Description
This recipe starts with a base of 32 ounces of frozen or homemade French fries cooked until extra crisp in the oven or air fryer. The hot fries are then layered with shredded cheddar cheese and cooked bacon pieces, briefly broiled until the cheese melts. Green onions provide a fresh bite and are sprinkled on top. Optionally, brown gravy can be drizzled over the fries, complemented by a dollop of sour cream for creaminess and acidity.
The fries maintain a crunchy texture beneath the melted cheese while the bacon adds a smoky, salty component. The brown gravy enriches the dish further, turning it into a hearty comfort food. It is served immediately to preserve the crispiness and warmth.
These loaded fries work well as a snack, appetizer, or side dish for burgers and sandwiches. The toppings can be adjusted according to preference for spice, additional cheese types, or extra garnishes.
Cooking times may vary depending on fry thickness and appliance. For air fryer users, cooking smaller batches and reheating together helps maintain crispness. Checking fries early allows timing adjustments to ensure desired texture.
Ingredients
Fries
- 32 ounces French Fries or 8 cups homemade french fries, frozen
Toppings
- 1 ½ cups cheddar cheese shredded
- 3 tablespoons Bacon or real bacon bits, cooked and crumbled
- 1 cup brown gravy homemade or packet, optional
- ½ cup sour cream
- 2 green onions thinly sliced
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 425°F (or cook fries in the air fryer per directions in the notes).
- Add the fries to a rimmed baking sheet and cook for 25-30 minutes or until extra crisp, stirring after 15 minutes.
- Once the fries are crisp, remove them from the oven and turn the broiler on to 500°F.
- Top the fries with cheddar and bacon and place back into the oven for 1-3 minutes or until the cheese is melted.
- Top with green onions. If using, drizzle with brown gravy and top with sour cream. Serve immediately.
Notes
- Adjust baking time based on fry thickness; thinner fries cook faster, thicker fries need longer.
- When air frying frozen fries, cook in smaller batches at 390°F for 10 to 14 minutes to achieve crispness.
- Reheat combined fries briefly in the air fryer before adding cheese and bacon to maintain crisp texture.
