Lunu Miris

Lunu miris is a spicy sauce or sambol paste, from Sri Lanka that is primarily prepared with red onion and chili. It is most commonly served as a paste or topping for many traditional Sri Lankan dishes.

Ingredients

  • 1 red onion finely chopped, large
  • 2 tablespoons chili powder
  • 1 tablespoon crushed red pepper mild
  • 1 tablespoon umbalakada (smoked and dried Maldives fish)
  • 2 teaspoons lime juice

Instructions

  1. Place all the ingredients except the lime juice in a mortar and, using a pestle, crush them.
  2. Pound the ingredients to develop their flavor.
  3. Add salt to taste.
  4. Add the lime juice and mix well with the pestle, pounding the mixture well.
