Description
This BBQ sauce starts by mixing tomato sauce with minced onion, brown sugar, black pepper, mustard powder, salt, molasses, corn syrup, cayenne pepper, garlic powder, and a measured amount of liquid smoke. Simmering the mixture for one hour allows the flavors to meld and the raw onion to soften, mellowing the sauce. The liquid smoke amount can be adjusted for preferred smokiness.
The resulting BBQ sauce is rich and sweet with a pronounced smoky undertone and a subtle spicy kick. The long simmer deepens flavors and thickens the sauce, making it suitable for basting or dipping. For a smoother consistency, blending to eliminate the onion pieces is an optional finishing step.
