Maple Bourbon Cranberry Sauce

Maple Bourbon Cranberry Sauce simmers fresh or frozen cranberries with apple cider, maple syrup, orange zest, and warm cinnamon to create a thick, tangy-sweet condiment. Finished with bourbon and vanilla extract off-heat, it balances fruity brightness with subtle warmth and depth, ideal for holiday meals or as a flavorful accompaniment.

Description

This sauce begins by boiling cranberries with apple cider (or orange juice or water), pure maple syrup, a pinch of sea salt, cinnamon, and fresh orange zest. As the cranberries soften and burst, the mixture thickens with stirring and mashing to reach a jam-like consistency. Removing the saucepan from heat before adding bourbon preserves its aroma and flavor, while vanilla extract adds a subtle sweet fragrance.

The final sauce combines tartness from cranberries and citrus with the smooth sweetness of maple syrup and depth from bourbon. This balanced profile makes it suitable for complementing roasted meats or festive dishes during holidays.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 16 ounces cranberries fresh or frozen
  • 1 cup apple cider or orange juice or water
  • 1 cup pure maple syrup
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 2 tsp orange zest
  • 1 pinch salt sea salt
  • 1/4 cup bourbon
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract pure
  • 1/4 tsp salt to taste, sea salt

Instructions

  1. Add all of the ingredients except for the bourbon and vanilla extract to a saucepan. Bring to a full boil. Mash the cranberries with a fork and continue cooking at a gentle boil, stirring frequently, until sauce has thickened and cranberries have lost much of their form.
  2. Remove sauce from heat and stir in the bourbon and vanilla extract (Note: if you want all of the alcohol to cook off of the bourbon, add it while you're cooking the cranberries). Transfer to a storage container. Refrigerate until ready to use.
