Maple Candied Brussels Sprouts with Bacon
Description
Maple Candied Brussels Sprouts with Bacon features thick-cut smoked bacon roasted until crisp, then finely chopped and set aside. The rendered bacon grease is used to coat trimmed Brussels sprouts along with maple syrup and salt, which are then roasted to tender perfection at 375°F, stirring occasionally to ensure even cooking. Once finished, they are tossed with the chopped bacon and seasoned with salt and black pepper. The combination creates caramelized, slightly firm Brussels sprouts with a sweet and smoky coating complemented by crispy bacon bits.
The flavor profile balances the earthiness of the sprouts with sweet maple syrup and the savory, smoky crunch of bacon. Roasting enhances the natural sweetness and imparts a gentle caramelization. This dish works well as a side for roasted meats or as part of a holiday meal, providing both texture and contrasting tastes.
Serving immediately after mixing ensures the bacon stays crisp and the sprouts are warm. The recipe’s method leverages rendered bacon fat for added depth, making the bacon integral beyond just a topping. For best results, monitor the sprout texture during roasting to avoid overcooking while achieving a tender bite.
Ingredients
- 1/2 pound Bacon thick cut, smoked
- 1.5 lb Brussels sprouts trimmed
- 2 Tbsp maple syrup
- salt to taste
- black pepper to taste
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350F
- Lay out the bacon on an un-greased baking sheet and roast until crisp, approximately 20 minutes. Drain the bacon on paper towels and reserve the grease. When the bacon is cool, finely chop it and set aside.
- Raise the oven temperature to 375F
- Toss the sprouts with 2 Tbsp of the reserved bacon grease, the maple syrup, and a dash of salt, making sure all the sprouts get evenly coated. Spread them out on the same baking sheet and roast for about 30 minutes, stirring once or twice during the cooking time so that they cook evenly. (Taste test the sprouts for doneness ~ they should be firm but not crunchy.)
- Toss the hot sprouts with the bacon, season with salt and pepper, and serve immediately.
