Maple Glazed Ham
Description
This recipe begins with a precooked, boneless ham placed in a foil-lined pan and basted with orange juice before low-temperature baking. While the ham reheats, a glaze is prepared by heating orange juice with brown sugar, maple syrup, and warm spices including cinnamon, cloves, and ginger. The glaze is simmered until slightly thickened and caramelized.
During the last half hour of baking, the oven temperature is increased to allow the glaze to set and caramelize on the surface, enhancing the ham's flavor and appearance. The ham is typically garnished with orange slices and rosemary for presentation.
The finished ham is juicy, with a balance of savory meat and sweet maple-spice glaze. It is ideal for holiday meals or special occasions. Resting the ham before slicing allows juices to redistribute for moist servings.
Leftover ham can be refrigerated for several days or frozen for longer storage. Reheat gently to maintain moisture, and consider tenting with foil during cooking to prevent drying.
Ingredients
- 7-9 pound ham precooked and sliced, boneless
- 1/2 cup orange juice divided, 2 Tablespoons
- 1 cup dark brown sugar
- 1/4 cup maple syrup
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon cloves ground
- 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
- orange for garnish (optional, slices (orange), fresh sprigs (rosemary
- rosemary for garnish (optional, slices (orange), fresh sprigs (rosemary
Instructions
- Adjust your oven rack to the lower third of your oven. Preheat oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Line a large baking dish or roasting pan with aluminum foil. Remove the packaging from the ham and place the ham inside of the foil.
- Baste the ham all over with the 2 tablespoons of orange juice. Cover the ham with the aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 10- 12 minutes per pound, or until the internal temperature has reached 145 degrees.
- While the ham is baking, make the glaze. In a medium sized sauce pan, heat the rest of the orange juice, brown sugar, maple syrup, cinnamon, cloves, and ginger over medium low heat. Stir well.
- Continue stirring until the mixture has begun to boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for a few minutes until the liquid has slightly thickened and become caramelized.
- During the last 30 minutes of baking time, remove the ham from the oven. Increase the temperature to 400 degrees. Baste the ham with the brown sugar glaze, then return it to the 400 degree oven and bake for about 30 more minutes, basting once more halfway through the cooking time. **Watch carefully, as you do not want the glaze to burn in the oven.**
- Remove the ham from the oven and baste as desired. Serve warm with orange slices and fresh rosemary sprigs as garnish.
Notes
- Tent the ham loosely with foil during baking to keep it moist and prevent drying out.
- Allow the ham to rest in the pan for at least 15 minutes before slicing to retain juices.
- Reheat precooked ham until it reaches 145°F internal temperature, generally 10-12 minutes per pound at 325°F.
- Store leftovers in airtight containers in the refrigerator for 3-4 days or freeze up to 3 months; thaw in the fridge before reheating.
