Maple Sausage French Toast Bake

The Maple Sausage French Toast Bake layers hearty breakfast sausage with cubed French bread soaked in a milk, egg, and maple syrup mixture. After an overnight soak in the refrigerator, it bakes into a rich and custardy casserole with a sweet maple glaze and brown sugar topping. This casserole offers a comforting combination of savory and sweet flavors, excellent for a make-ahead brunch or breakfast dish that holds well for family gatherings.

Description

The Maple Sausage French Toast Bake begins by cooking and draining breakfast sausage, which is layered within cubed French bread that has been soaked in a mixture of eggs, milk, salt, maple syrup, and brown sugar. The bread mixture is divided to sandwich the sausage, creating distinct savory layers within the sweet custardy base. After spreading brown sugar and drizzling additional maple syrup on top, the casserole is covered and refrigerated for at least eight hours, allowing the bread to fully absorb the egg mixture for a tender, baked texture.

Baked uncovered at 350°F for about an hour, this dish develops a golden surface with sweet maple notes and a combination of textures: soft soaked bread and savory sausage. The slow soak and bake method creates a satisfying balance between rich creaminess and hearty sausage pieces.

This casserole is well suited for weekend brunches or holiday breakfasts. Its make-ahead nature allows time-saving preparation for serving multiple people. It pairs well with fresh fruit or coffee for a complete morning meal.

  4. In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, salt, 1 tablespoon brown sugar, and 2 tablespoons maple syrup. Pour the milk mixture over the bread pieces and toss to coat.
  5. Spread half of the bread mixture out in the prepared baking dish. Spread all of the sausage over the bread, and the spread the remaining bread over the sausage.
  6. Sprinkle 2 tablespoons of brown sugar over the top of the french toast. Drizzle the remaining 4 tablespoons maple syrup all over the top.
  7. Cover with foil or plastic wrap and refrigerate for 8 hours or overnight.
  8. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F. Remove the casserole from the fridge and uncover the baking dish.
  9. Bake for 60 min or until the top is golden brown. Remove from the oven and serve warm with extra syrup.
