Margarita Salt

Margarita Salt is a fragrant seasoning blend combining coarse kosher salt, granulated sugar, and zests of lime and orange that have been gently baked to dry. This aromatic mixture adds a citrusy twist to the traditional salted rim used for margaritas and other cocktails.

Description

This Margarita Salt starts by baking freshly grated lime and orange zest to dry and mellow their flavors without browning. After cooling, the zests are mixed evenly with coarse kosher salt and granulated sugar. The sugar balances the saltiness while the citrus zest infuses the blend with bright, fresh citrus notes. Stored in airtight jars, this mixture keeps well for several months.

Margarita Salt complements drinks by rim coating glasses and can enhance any cocktail that benefits from a salty-sweet-citrus accent. Unlike plain salt, the addition of sugar and citrus zest adds complexity and freshness, making it a flavorful garnish for margaritas, micheladas, or even grilled fruits and seafood.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 2 tablespoons lime zest freshly grated, about 3 medium limes
  • 2 tablespoons orange zest freshly grated, about 1 medium orange
  • 1/2 cup kosher salt coarse
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 300 degrees. Combine the lime zest and orange zest on a baking sheet. Bake for 5 minutes. Remove the baking sheet from the oven and allow the zest to cool completely, about 20 minutes.
  2. In a medium bowl, combine the salt and sugar. Add the zests and stir until evenly distributed. Divide the salt mixture between 2 (4-ounce) jars with tight-fitting lids. Store in a cool, dry place for up to 6 months.

Notes

  • Dry the citrus zests by baking at 300°F for 5 minutes, then allow to cool thoroughly before mixing.
  • Mix the cooled zests thoroughly with kosher salt and granulated sugar to evenly distribute the citrus flavor.
  • Store the Margarita Salt in airtight jars in a cool, dry place for up to 6 months to maintain freshness.
