Margarita Slush
Description
The Margarita Slush mixes frozen limeade concentrate with tequila and an orange-flavored liqueur such as triple sec, combined with lemon-lime soda to give it effervescence and sweetness. The mixture is chilled in the freezer for several hours to develop a semi-frozen slush consistency. Before serving, the slush is scraped to make it easier to scoop and optionally served with a glass rimmed in salt and garnished with lime wedges.
The balance of tequila blanco or reposado with the citrus and sweetness from the soda and limeade produces a layered flavor profile with tartness and smoothness. The slush texture creates a cool, refreshing feel suited to warm weather or celebrations.
This recipe makes about 12 cocktails, allowing for batch preparation well in advance. Classic glassware like a Margarita glass or a lowball glass can be used depending on occasion and personal preference.
Ingredients
- 2 (6 ounce) cans limeade concentrate thawed, frozen
- 2 cups tequila (see note 1)
- 1 cup triple sec or orange liqueur (see note 2)
- 1 (2-liter) bottle lemon-lime soda plus more, for serving
- lime for serving, wedges
Instructions
- In an empty one-gallon ice cream pail, combine limeade concentrate, tequila, triple sec, and 2 liter bottle of soda. Place in the freezer and chill at least 8 hours, overnight, or up to a month in advance.
- Remove from freezer 1-2 hours before serving. As the slush melts, it will become easier to scrape and serve.
- To serve, add 1 cup slush to a glass (rim the glass with coarse salt if desired, see note 3). Top with additional soda and garnish with a lime slice or wedge.
Notes
- Use tequila blanco for lighter body cocktails or reposado for sipping style.
- Triple sec or another orange liqueur such as Cointreau or Grand Marnier works in the recipe.
- To salt glass rims, dip lime-rimmed glass edges into coarse salt.
- The recipe yields approximately 12 servings.
- Classic Margarita or lowball glassware is suitable for serving.
