Mashed Rutabaga

Mashed Rutabaga features rutabaga and carrot boiled until tender, then mashed smoothly with melted butter and warmed heavy cream. This results in a creamy vegetable mash seasoned simply with salt and black pepper, offering a subtly sweet, earthy flavor with a soft texture similar to mashed potatoes.

Description

To prepare Mashed Rutabaga, rutabaga and carrots are peeled, cubed, and cooked in salted water until fork-tender, about 15 minutes. After draining, they are mashed using a potato masher or mixer until smooth. Melted butter is folded in for richness, and warmed heavy cream is added gradually to reach a creamy consistency. Seasoning with salt and black pepper completes the dish.

The texture is smooth and creamy, with a mild sweetness from the carrots blending nicely with the slightly sharp flavor of rutabaga. The mash is a comforting side dish that offers a variation to traditional mashed potatoes.

The simplicity of the ingredients keeps this recipe versatile, able to accompany roasted or grilled meats and other vegetables.
