Mashed Sweet Potatoes

Mashed Sweet Potatoes transform baked sweet potatoes into a creamy side dish enhanced with butter, half and half, salt, and black pepper. The result is a smooth, rich mash with a balance of natural sweetness and savory seasoning. This straightforward recipe highlights the sweet potato's flavor and texture, suitable for serving alongside a variety of main courses.

Description

Sweet potatoes are first pierced and baked at 425°F until tender, then halved and scooped into a bowl. Softened butter is mixed in and the potatoes are mashed to smoothness using a masher or hand mixer. Half and half is added gradually to achieve a creamy consistency. Seasoning with kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper completes the dish.

The baking step concentrates the sweet potatoes' natural sugars, while mashing with butter and cream creates a velvety texture. This method avoids becoming watery, particularly if excess liquid is drained when boiled instead of baked.

These mashed sweet potatoes can complement many meals and offer a simple, comforting vegetable side. Alternate cooking methods include boiling cut pieces until tender or using an air fryer. When boiling, excess water should be drained and removed to avoid thinning the mash.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 4 lbs sweet potato approximately 8-9 sweet potatoes
  • 5-6 Tbsp butter softened to room temperature
  • 1/3-1/2 cup half and half or milk
  • 1/2 tsp kosher salt
  • black pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Pierce sweet potatoes several times with a small knife or tines of a fork. Line a baking sheet with foil and bake at 425 F degrees for 45-50 minutes.
  2. Slice potatoes in half lengthwise, then scoop out the flesh into a large mixing bowl.
  3. Add butter and mash with a potato masher or hand mixer. Mix in half and half a few tablespoons at a time, until desired consistency is reached.
  4. Stir in salt and pepper.

Notes

  • Sweet potatoes can be boiled in salted water for about 15 minutes as an alternative to baking; drain thoroughly and dry in the hot pot to remove excess moisture before mashing.
  • Softened butter and gradual addition of half and half help achieve a creamy, smooth texture without excess liquid.
  • Air fryer baking can also be used as a substitute for oven baking to cook the sweet potatoes.
