Mashed Sweet Potatoes

Mashed Sweet Potatoes use peeled, cut sweet potatoes boiled until tender, then mashed with butter and cream or milk. Seasoned with salt and pepper, and optionally a hint of cinnamon, this dish offers a smooth, creamy texture with natural sweetness and warm spice. The hand-mashed preparation prevents over-processing and maintains a fluffy consistency.

Description

The preparation begins by boiling peeled sweet potato pieces in salted water until they are fork-tender, typically 10 to 15 minutes. After draining, they sit briefly to allow excess water to evaporate, preventing watery mash. The sweet potatoes are returned to the pot or a bowl, then mashed by hand using a masher while incorporating butter in pieces for richness.

Heavy cream or milk is gradually added to achieve a creamy texture without becoming too thin. Salt and pepper are added to taste, balancing the natural sweetness. A half teaspoon of cinnamon can be included optionally to introduce a warm, aromatic note that complements the sweet tubers.

Hand mashing rather than blending preserves a fluffy, slightly chunky texture, avoiding a gluey consistency. This makes it a suitable side dish for meals needing a smooth but hearty accompaniment.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 3-4 pounds sweet potato peeled and sliced into 1” rounds or chunks
  • cup butter cut into 4 pieces
  • cup heavy cream or milk
  • salt to taste
  • black pepper to taste
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon optional

Instructions

  1. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add sweet potatoes and boil until tender, about 10 - 15 minutes.
  2. Drain well and allow to sit in the colander a few minutes to make sure all water evaporates.
  3. Return sweet potatoes to the pot or a large bowl, and add butter to the potatoes and mash with a hand masher. Add cream or milk a little bit at a time to reach desired consistency.
  4. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Serve hot and top with a dash of cinnamon if desired.

Notes

  • Cut sweet potatoes into similarly sized pieces to ensure even cooking.
  • Boil until the potatoes are fork tender but avoid overcooking to prevent water absorption.
  • Use a hand masher instead of a blender to keep the mash from becoming soupy.
  • Add cream or milk gradually to control the texture of the mashed potatoes.
