Mashed Sweet Potatoes Recipe
Description
Mashed Sweet Potatoes Recipe blends Yukon and sweet potatoes for a creamy, well-rounded flavor and texture. The potatoes are peeled, diced, and simmered with onion, bay leaves, and garlic to infuse a subtle aromatic base. After cooking, the potato mixture is mashed until uniform and enhanced by hot melted butter and sour cream, resulting in a velvety consistency with slight tang. Topping the mash with golden-browned chopped bacon adds a savory crunch that contrasts the smoothness. Chives sprinkled on top add a fresh, mild oniony note and visual appeal.
The cooking process involves boiling the potatoes until tender, then removing aromatics so the flavors remain gentle but present. The butter is melted and added while hot to integrate smoothly. The use of sour cream contributes moisture and a creamy texture. The crispy bacon prepared separately and sprinkled on top provides a satisfying contrasting texture and smoky flavor. Chives provide a light finishing touch for color and mild savory flavor.
This mash works well as a hearty side dish for roasted meats or poultry, complementing savory main courses with its richness and mild sweetness. It can also serve as a comforting vegetable dish for less formal meals but with a touch of indulgence due to the butter, sour cream, and bacon.

- 2 lbs yukon potatoes (7 medium), peeled
- 1 lb sweet potato 2 medium), peeled
- 1 onion peeled and halved, small
- 2 bay leaf
- 3 garlic cloves
- 1/2 Tbsp salt sea salt
- 4 Tbsp butter melted, hot, unsalted
- 3 Tbsp sour cream
- 4 oz Bacon chopped
- 1 Tbsp chives chopped, to garnish
Instructions
- Peel and dice yukon and sweet potatoes into 1/2" cubes, then place them in a large pot. Add halved onion, 2 bay leaves, 3 garlic cloves, and enough water to cover potatoes then place over medium/high heat.
