Matcha Cocktail
Description
The Matcha Cocktail features a syrup made by dissolving sugar in water and infusing it with cucumber slices to impart a fresh, cool flavor. Matcha powder is carefully whisked into water to form a smooth paste before mixing with the syrup, gin, and lime juice, creating a crisp and slightly vegetal base. Fresh cucumber slices, mint leaves, and lime slices are gently muddled in the serving jar to release their bright, aromatic qualities without over-breaking the cucumber. Served over ice, this cocktail balances subtle sweetness, tartness, and earthy matcha notes.
This drink suits light, warm weather occasions where a lively but not overly strong cocktail pairs well with fresh or light foods. The combination of cucumber and mint brings cooling elements, making it a good choice for outdoor gatherings or as a palate cleanser between dishes. The gin adds botanical complexity without overpowering the matcha's delicate flavors.
For best results, ingredients including cucumber and matcha powder should be chilled beforehand. The cucumber syrup can be refrigerated and kept for one to two weeks, while the assembled cocktail remains good for several days when chilled. Stir gently to maintain the crisp texture and avoid creating matcha lumps, which can detract from the smooth mouthfeel. Using culinary-grade matcha provides good flavor without the premium cost of ceremonial grade.
Ingredients
For the cucumber syrup
- ½ cup (100g) sugar
- ½ cup (125 ml) water
- 10 lices cucumber
- 1¼ teaspoon matcha green tea powder
- 2 cups (500 ml) water
- ½ cup (125 ml) gin
- 4 tablespoons lime juice
For the Cucumber Matcha Cocktail
- 3 tablespoons cucumber syrup
- cucumber slices
- mint leaves
- 1/2 lime sliced
- ice cubes
Instructions
Make the syrup:
- To make the cucumber syrup combine the sugar and water in a saucepan, and heat gently whilst stirring regularly until all sugar has dissolved. Then add in cucumber slices and leave them till the syrup cools completely. Discard the cucumber.
Make the Cucumber Matcha Cocktail:
- Add the matcha into a good sized bowl and slowly add 2 tablespoons of water, a little bit at a time, mixing constantly to make a smooth matcha paste. Then slowly mix in the rest of the water, followed by the gin, lime juice and cucumber syrup.
- Place some cucumber slices and mint leaves in each cocktail jar and mash with a wooden spoon. Then add in some lime slices and ice before topping up with the cucumber matcha cocktail.
Notes
- Chill cucumber and matcha powder before preparation to keep the cocktail refreshing.
- Prepare matcha paste by slowly adding water while stirring to avoid clumps.
- Fine strain the mixture for a smoother drink, removing any matcha lumps or cucumber bits.
- Gently stir the cocktail to combine flavors without breaking up cucumber slices.
- Store cucumber syrup refrigerated for 1-2 weeks and the complete cocktail for 4-5 days.
- Use quality culinary-grade matcha for optimal flavor without needing ceremonial grade.
