Matcha Dutch Baby

The Matcha Dutch Baby is a light, puffy oven-baked pancake featuring a subtle green tea flavor from matcha powder. Made with a simple batter of flour, milk, egg, vanilla, and vegetable oil, it is baked in a hot cast iron skillet to achieve a golden puff. The texture combines a crisp edge with a tender center. It is served immediately after baking, often garnished with powdered sugar, extra matcha powder, fresh fruit, or whipped cream for added flavor and visual appeal.

Description

The Matcha Dutch Baby stands out with its inclusion of sifted matcha green tea powder mixed into the batter along with classic pancake ingredients like flour, egg, milk, and vanilla extract. The batter is chilled to improve texture before being poured into a preheated cast iron skillet greased with butter. Baking at a high temperature causes the batter to rise dramatically, creating a light and airy interior with slightly crisp edges. Once out of the oven, the Dutch Baby deflates somewhat but keeps its delicate texture.

The final dish balances the mild earthy bitterness of the matcha with the softness of the pancake and the rich butter used in cooking. It can be enhanced by topping with powdered sugar and fresh fruits or complemented with a dollop of whipped cream. This presentation makes it suitable for a brunch treat or a special breakfast with a distinctive flavor twist.

The recipe recommends serving the Dutch Baby immediately after baking when it is at its freshest. The use of a preheated iron skillet ensures the characteristic puff and texture. Chilling the batter before baking improves the final rise and texture. Garnishes can be customized according to preference to balance the matcha flavor and add visual interest.
