Matcha French Toast

Matcha French Toast features thick slices of day-old bread soaked in an egg mixture flavored with matcha powder, vanilla, milk, and a touch of sugar, then pan-fried to golden softness. The green tea powder adds an earthy flavor and subtle green color to a classic breakfast favorite. Served with powdered sugar, maple syrup, and fresh berries, it offers a balanced sweetness and visual appeal.

Description

This recipe involves whisking egg, melted butter or oil, milk, sugar, vanilla extract, and sifted matcha powder to create a smooth custard. Day-old, thick-cut bread is dipped and pressed into the custard to absorb the flavors. Cooking on low heat with a covered pan helps the toast cook through without burning, resulting in a tender, custardy interior with a lightly crisp surface.

Serving suggestions include dusting with powdered sugar or matcha powder, drizzling maple syrup, and topping with fresh berries to offer contrasting sweetness and freshness. This matcha variation adds a unique twist to traditional French toast by incorporating green tea flavor.

Ingredients

Servings

Matcha French Toast:

  • 2 bread day old is best, thick-cut sliced
  • 1 egg beaten, large
  • 1 tablespoon butter or neutral vegetable oil, melted
  • ¼ C milk or non-dairy alternative, whole
  • 1 teaspoon granulated sugar or any sweetener that you like
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ tablespoon matcha green tea powder sifted
  • 1 teaspoon butter or oil, for greasing the pan

To serve:

  • powdered sugar optional
  • maple syrup
  • fresh berries

Instructions

  1. In a shallow bowl, lightly whisk together the egg, melted butter (or oil), and milk. Add in sugar, vanilla extract and matcha. Whisk until everything is combined.
  2. If the mixture has a few lumps from the matcha powder, pour the mixture through a sieve.
  3. Heat a frying pan over medium-low heat. Lightly grease with 1 teaspoon butter (or oil).
  4. Dip one slice of bread into the egg mixture and flip. Press firmly on the bread to ensure it soaks up the mixture.
  5. Place the egg-soaked bread into the frying pan and cook over low heat for 4-5 minutes (depending on how thick your bread is). Cover with a lid. Remove the lid and flip the bread. Cover and cook for another 1-2 minutes.
  6. Repeat with the remaining slice of bread.
  7. Serve with powdered sugar/matcha dusted on top, and/or maple syrup and berries.
