Meat Sauce Recipe
Description
The Meat Sauce Recipe uses a mix of ground beef and sweet Italian sausage cooked with onion, garlic, fennel seeds, and Italian seasoning. These aromatic ingredients build a flavorful foundation before adding crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, and white wine. Simmering the sauce for about 60 minutes allows the flavors to meld and the sauce to thicken, resulting in a hearty and well-seasoned meat sauce. The fennel seeds contribute a subtle anise undertone, complementing the richness of the meats and tomatoes.
The texture includes small chunks of meat evenly distributed throughout the thick tomato sauce, suitable for coating pasta or layering in baked dishes. The seasoning balance is enhanced with kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste.
This sauce works well as a base for spaghetti, rigatoni, or lasagna recipes. It's best simmered slowly to develop maximum flavor and can be prepared ahead for convenience. The recipe suggests substituting broth for wine if preferred, accommodating different ingredient availability and dietary preferences.
Ingredients
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 pound Italian sausage sweet
- 1/3 cup onion diced
- 5 cloves garlic minced
- 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper freshly ground
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1 bay leaf whole
- 1 teaspoon fennel seeds
- 1 crushed tomatoes 28 oz
- 2 tomato paste 6 oz
- 1/2 cup white wine
Instructions
- In a large saucepan add one tablespoon of avocado or olive oil and heat over medium-high heat.
- Add sausage and ground beef and break into small chunks with a spoon. Continue to break down the meat as it cooks into the size you desire.
- Drain meat if there is extra water or fat.
- Add diced onion, garlic, Italian seasoning and fennel seeds and stir for 1 minute. Season with salt and pepper.
- Add crushed tomatoes, tomato paste and wine (or broth). Stir until the ingredients and well combined.
- Reduce heat to a simmer and cook for 60 minutes.
Notes
- Broth can be used instead of white wine if desired to avoid alcohol or for a milder flavor.
