Meatball Casserole
Description
Meatball Casserole brings together Italian-style meatballs and mashed potatoes as the foundation, topped with shredded mozzarella cheese and fresh parsley garnish. The dish is assembled by layering mashed potatoes in a casserole dish, arranging meatballs on top, then baking until warmed through. Adding cheese near the end of baking produces a melted, lightly browned topping that adds mild richness and texture contrast.
The combination of creamy mashed potatoes with well-seasoned meatballs offers a satisfying balance of textures and flavors. The parsley adds a fresh note to finish the dish visually and in taste. This style of casserole is practical and filling, suitable for family dinners or meal prepping in advance.
This casserole can be stored covered in the refrigerator and reheated later. It also freezes well when wrapped tightly. Variations in sauce type are possible by substituting marinara for an Alfredo or bechamel sauce to alter the flavor profile according to preference.
Ingredients
- 1 recipe Italian meatballs
- 1 recipe potato mashed
- 2 cups mozzarella cheese shredded
- 2 tablespoon parsley chopped, fresh
Instructions
- Prepare mashed potatoes and meatballs: Prepare mashed potatoes as specified in my recipe here. Prepare Italian meatballs including sauce as specified in my recipe here.
- Prep oven: Preheat the oven to 350°F.
- Prepare casserole dish: Spray a 9x13-inch casserole dish with a bit of cooking spray (I used my Le Creuset Braiser, link under equipment).
- Assemble casserole: Layer the mashed potatoes in the bottom of your casserole dish. Arrange the meatballs on top of the mashed potatoes evenly.
- Bake: Transfer the casserole dish to the oven and bake for 20 minutes or until heated through. Sprinkle with mozzarella cheese evenly over the meatballs and bake for another 10 minutes or until the cheese has melted and starts to brown.
- Serve: Garnish with parsley and serve warm.
Notes
- This casserole can be assembled ahead of time and refrigerated, covered tightly with foil, then baked when ready.
- Allow frozen casserole to thaw in the refrigerator for 24 hours before baking to ensure even heating.
- You may substitute marinara sauce with Alfredo or béchamel sauces for different flavor variations.
- Leftover casserole can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3 to 5 days or frozen for up to 10 months.
