Melon ball ice cubes
Description
Melon ball ice cubes are made by halving and deseeding chosen melon varieties like watermelon, cantaloupe, or different honeydew types. Using a melon baller, rounded pieces are scooped and arranged individually on a lined baking sheet to freeze solid separately. Once frozen, they can be transferred to a freezer bag for storage. This method prevents the balls from sticking together and allows easy portioning.
These melon balls can be added to beverages to cool without watering them down, used as a garnish for cocktails, or incorporated into chilled fruit salads. Their natural sweetness and firmness remain after freezing, offering a fresh fruit element especially in warm weather.
Use the leftover melon flesh after scooping melon balls in smoothies, cocktails, or chilled melon soups to avoid waste and add flavor.
Ingredients
Your choice of melon(s):
- watermelon
- cantaloupe
- honeydew melon
- honeydew melon white variety
Instructions
- Rinse the melons, cut them in half and remove the seeds.
- Use a melon baller to scoop out the melon balls from the fruit. Don’t worry if they’re not all perfectly round – they will flatten slightly when you freeze them.
- Use a baking sheet or flat platter that can fit in your freezer. Line the baking sheet with parchment paper or wax paper.
- Arrange the melon balls on the baking sheet. Make sure that the melon balls are not touching (or they will freeze together).
- Freeze the melon balls for a few hours or until completely frozen. Remove them from the freezer and transfer them to a freezer bag. Place the bag in the freezer until ready to use.
Notes
- Use the leftover parts of the melon (what's left after scooping out the melon balls) to make a smoothie, cocktails, or a cold melon soup.
