Memphis BBQ Sauce

Memphis BBQ Sauce is a thick, tangy, and mildly sweet sauce featuring tomato sauce, brown sugar, molasses, apple cider vinegar, and spices like chili powder and cayenne. The sauce begins by sautéing onions and garlic to add depth, then simmering all ingredients until thickened. It offers a balanced flavor suitable for coating grilled or smoked meats.

Description

This Memphis BBQ Sauce recipe starts by cooking diced onion in vegetable oil over medium heat until translucent and just beginning to brown, bringing out sweetness and complexity. Garlic is then added briefly to release its aroma. Tomato sauce forms the base, combined with brown sugar and molasses for rich sweetness and depth.

The addition of apple cider vinegar lends acidity and brightness that cuts through the sweetness, while Worcestershire sauce and yellow mustard introduce subtle umami and tang. Chili powder, cayenne pepper, celery seed, kosher salt, and coarse black pepper add layered spice and seasoning, characteristic of classic Memphis-style barbecue sauces.

Simmering the sauce uncovered concentrates the flavors and thickens the texture to a rich consistency that adheres well to ribs, pulled pork, or grilled chicken. This sauce can be used hot or cooled and refrigerated until needed.
