Description

This recipe begins by sautéing half-ring sliced onions and thinly sliced mushrooms in neutral oil over high heat until golden brown, seasoning with salt. The mixture is set aside while ground beef is seasoned and formed into patties slightly larger than the buns. The patties cook in a pan over medium heat, pressed and flipped until reaching 165°F internal temperature. Cheese slices are added near the end to melt over the burgers.

Each burger is assembled with a cheesy patty, a generous portion of the sautéed onion and mushroom mix, and condiments like mayonnaise and ketchup between buns. The contrast of the rich meat with the savory, caramelized vegetables provides a satisfying texture and flavor combination. Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp neutral cooking oil olive or avocado, generic cooking oil
  • 1 onion half rings, large
  • 1 lb mushrooms sliced
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 tbsp salt or other favorite seasoning
  • 4 cheese slices
  • 4 burger buns or brioche buns

Condiments

  • mayonnaise
  • ketchup

Instructions

  1. Slice the onions into half rings and the mushrooms into thin pieces. On high heat, sauté the veggies until they are golden brown. Season to taste with salt, then set aside. 
  2. In a large bowl, mix the ground beef and seasoning together with your hands. Form burger patties about 3/4-inch thick, slightly larger than the size of the burger buns. 
  3. In a large pan, cook patties on medium heat while pressing down on the patty, about five minutes per side or until the internal temperature reaches 165°F. If desired, add the cheese close to when the meat is all done. 
  4. Assemble the burger by starting with the bun, then layering on a cheesy burger patty, a handful of the onion and mushroom mixture, and topping with the top bun dressed in your choice of condiment. Repeat until all the burgers are dressed.
  5. Let the burgers rest for a few minutes, then enjoy!
