Mexican Wontons Recipe
Description
The filling mixes pepper jack cheese for a sharp, spicy melt with smooth cream cheese, mild diced green chiles, garlic powder, and chili powder to deepen the flavor. Each wonton wrapper is filled with about a teaspoon of mixture, sealed by brushing edges with water, and folded into triangles to encase the filling. Deep frying in vegetable oil at around 365°F crisps the wrappers to a golden brown, while heating the filling thoroughly.
These wontons can be served immediately to retain their crisp texture and are excellent party snacks or appetizers for Mexican-themed meals. Common accompaniments include guacamole, queso dip, or fresh pico de gallo.
Ingredients
- 1 pound pepper jack cheese finely shredded
- 1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese softened
- ½ (4-ounce) can diced green chiles
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- ½ tsp chili powder
- 1 (14-ounce) package wonton wrappers
- 4 cups vegetable oil for deep frying
Instructions
- Add shredded cheese, cream cheese, diced chilies, garlic powder, and chili powder to a medium bowl and mix until combined.
- Place about 1 teaspoon of this mixture into the center of each wonton.
- Brush the edges of the wonton wrapper with water and fold diagonally in half. Firmly press edges together to seal.
- Heat oil in a pot to 365°F. Fry about 6 wontons at a time until golden brown and drain on a paper towel-lined plate. Serve immediately with Guacamole, Queso, or Pico.
