Microwave Corn on the Cob
Description
This method starts by removing the stalk end of an un-husked ear of corn with a shallow cut. The corn is microwaved whole for three minutes and allowed to rest for a minute, cooking the kernels through steam. After cooking, the top of the corn is carefully squeezed to release the cob from the husk and silk, making removal straightforward. The kernels remain tender and retain moisture. Brushing with melted butter and a sprinkle of salt adds richness and flavor.
The microwaving process cooks the corn quickly without boiling water or using a grill, preserving natural sweetness and texture. Multiple ears can be cooked by adding extra time—approximately one to two minutes per additional ear—with care not to overcrowd the microwave in a single layer for even heat exposure.
For husked corn, wrapping in a damp paper towel before microwaving helps steam the kernels efficiently. This technique is practical for quick preparation and is useful when stove or grill access is limited.
If cut off stalk is difficult before cooking, it can be delayed until after microwaving when the corn softens, but caution is advised given the steam and heat.
Ingredients
- corn on the cob un-husked
- butter optional for brushing
- salt optional
Instructions
- Place corn on a cutting board, and cut off the stalk end by making a shallow cut all the way around the corn and then slicing through.
- Place the corn in the microwave and microwave for 3 minutes. Let it sit for 1 minute.
- Carefully, using an oven mitt or towel if necessary, squeeze the top of the corn so that the cob slides out.
- Rinse, pat dry, brush with melted butter and sprinkle with salt if desired, and enjoy!
Notes
- For multiple ears, add 1 to 2 minutes per ear in the microwave, typically cooking up to 3 or 4 ears in a single layer.
- Cutting the stalk off before microwaving is easier after cooking if the corn is too firm.
- To cook husked corn, wrap in a damp paper towel before microwaving.
- Microwave 2 ears for 4-5 minutes, 3 ears for 5-6 minutes, and 4 ears for 6-7 minutes for best results.
