Microwave Corn on the Cob
Description
The method involves microwaving whole ears of corn with their husks and silk intact, which traps steam and cooks the corn through gently yet quickly. After about 3 to 4 minutes, depending on the ear size, the ends are carefully trimmed and the husks peeled back, allowing the silk to come off with minimal effort. This technique preserves moisture and tenderness in the kernels.
Seasoning with butter, salt, and black pepper finishes the corn with smooth richness and flavor contrast. It is a convenient side dish that reduces preparation and cleanup compared to boiling or grilling.
Microwave time should be adjusted based on ear size and microwave power. Using oven mitts when handling hot ears is advised. Leftover shucked corn can be reheated by wrapping in damp paper towels.
Ingredients
- 2 corn on the cob
- 1 tablespoon butter
- salt to taste
- black pepper to taste
Instructions
- Place corn in the microwave (with silk & husks intact).
- Microwave on high power for 3 minutes (smaller cobs) or 4 minutes (larger cobs).
- Remove from the microwave and using a sharp knife, cut both ends off of the corn. Careful, it will be hot!
- Slide the corn out of the husk (the silk should slide right off too).
- Season with butter, salt, & pepper to taste.
Notes
- Adjust cooking time according to the size of the corn and microwave power; add about 1 minute per additional ear.
- Use oven mitts to handle hot corn carefully after microwaving.
- To reheat leftover shucked corn, wrap it in damp paper towels before microwaving.
